WSU King Co Extension Food $ense CHANGE

Food $ense teaches nutrition through gardening and cooking to over 2200 youth in 9 elementary schools in the Highline, Tukwila, Bellevue, Auburn and Seattle School Districts. Food $ense assists each school with constructing a teaching garden.

Praises for your healthy food program! Ben has been requesting healthy snacks for several days now – this seems to have gotten through to him unlike my years of nagging. I really appreciate it! Thank you.

CHANGE Program assists with the creation and maintenance of school gardens, designed for each school’s needs, to be used as an outdoor classroom. Through working in the garden we help children gain knowledge of – and appreciation for – where their food comes from, develop a taste for new fruits and vegetables, learn to grow their own food, and ultimately learn to make healthier food choices.

We love volunteers! We appreciate help with garden maintenance — weeding, watering or planting as needed, especially during school vacations when school staff is unavailable to care for the gardens. We also invite volunteers to support CHANGE Educators during classroom lessons, while working directly with children.

We will gladly accept donations of garden tools, wood or plastic containers to use as portable planting containers for schools that require container gardens, seeds, and large grow lights.

Our curriculum and more information about our program can be found here.
